Archaeology Tours
Transport will be by mini-bus allowing you both comfort and all round views.
Your tours will include stops at viewpoints to give you the best chance to capture Shetland’s unique landscapes on camera and where possible our wonderful wildlife.
The emphases of these tours are landscapes and scenery; however, where possible we will include other visitor attractions in your tour, i.e. historic sites or museums or arts and crafts.
Where possible we will try to include a café stop at lunchtime but if a packed lunch is required this will be stated in your itinerary. If you wish on your return from the tour you can be dropped off at your accommodation.
Mousa and Broch Tour.
We get our first experience of the brochs and Iron Age settlement with a guided tour of Clickimin. From Lerwick we drive south through Cunningsburgh to the dramatic hillsides around Catpund where we will take a short walk to visit the Viking soapstone quarries. From here we get splendid views to the east and of Mousa broch.
We will stop for a lunch break near the Hoswick Visitor Centre where there is a café. After lunch a ferry trip to Mousa then a guided walk around the island to look for birds, seals and wild flowers. Our tour ends with an exploration of the awe inspiring broch that has remained almost unchanged for 2000 years.
Please note that outdoor clothes and footwear is essential.
South Mainland Archaeology Tour.
From Lerwick we drive south to Dunrossness where we experience life in a 19th century croft house, complete with the unforgettable aroma of real peat smoke. At Scatness we move further back in time with a guided tour of the Iron Age broch and village and are enlightened by the living history displays.
Sumburgh Head Nature reserve is an ideal place to eat your packed lunch in the company of puffins before a guided walk through 5000 years of Shetland history at Jarlshof. Our return journey will give us a view of nature in perfection in the form of the tombolo at St Ninian's Isle.
